  PhD Position at GEOMAR, Kiel (Germany)

The GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, Research Division
of Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics, is offering aPhD-Position
starting 01.10.2014 in the international project „CE:LLO“.

We seek a highly motivated student to improve our understanding
ofcompound extreme events, both in present day climate and under
anthropogenic future climate change. The focus is on extended drought in
conjunction with heatwaves, and storm surges in combination with
rain-induced river flooding. Main task of the project is to develop a
multivariate statistical model to describe the compound nature of
extreme events, and to apply this model to observational data and data
from climate model ensembles. The student will be enrolled in the
Integrated School of Ocean Sciences (ISOS) at Kiel University and
co-supervised by Prof. Dr. Douglas Maraun at GEOMAR, Dr. Mathieu Vrac at
the LSCE close to Paris, France, and Dr. Martin Widmann from the
University of Birmingham, UK. He/she will closely collaborate with a
second PhD-student based in Birmingham. Integral part of the Phd
programme will be visits to project partners at Oslo University in
Norway, as well as long term research stays at LSCE and Birmingham
University.

The successful candidate will have a MSc-degree in meteorology,
climatology, physics, applied statistics or a related quantitative
science. The student should have a strong interest in meteorological
processes, but also in delving into modern statistical concepts. Proven
expertise in modern applied multivariate statistics is highly desirable.
We expect the candidate to enjoy working in a team in an international
research environment and to be keen to develop their meteorological and
statistical knowledge as well as practical skills.

The post is funded by the Volkswagen Foundation and is for 36 months.
The salary will be according to 75% TVöD-Bund 13 of the German tariff
for public employees. The position cannot be split.

The Maritime Continent is one of the key regions for climate and remains
amongst the most poorly simulated areas in climate models. In
recognition of this issue, the ARC Centre of Excellence and the Bureau
of Meteorology are co-funding the joint Maritime Continent Fellowship.

As the successful candidate, you will use a combination of observational
and modelling approaches to improve the representation of rainfall in
and around the Maritime Continent in the Australian Community Climate
and Earth System Simulator (ACCESS). This research will therefore
contribute directly to improved prediction systems on various timescales.

If you have a doctoral degree in atmospheric science, or a related
field, a good understanding of tropical meteorology in particular
atmospheric convection and a sound grasp of General Circulation Models,

Within the DFG funded „Ensemble projections of hydro-biogeochemical
fluxes under climate change“/,/the Chair for Climatology, Climate
Dynamics and Climate Change (Prof. J. Luterbacher), Department of
Geography, Justus Liebig University of Giessen, Germany, offers a

3-year fulltime Postdoc in statistical climatology/modelling, starting
1st November 2014


Payment will be according to „Entgeltgruppe 13 Tarifvertrag Hessen (TV-H)“.

Duties: Set up of an ensemble of climate models and statistical
downscaling to investigate the predictive uncertainties of different
chains of models as well as their combined uncertainty. CORDEX
simulations (Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment;
<http://wcrp-cordex.ipsl.jussieu.fr/>EURO-CORDEX) as well as regional
process models in combination with instrumental data will be analysed
and statistical downscaling will be applied to two selected catchments
in Germany and the UK. Extreme Value Theory will be performed using
meteorological data and downscaled model output for the 20th century and
first part of the 21st century. In collaboration with Prof. Lutz Breuer
(Chair of Landscape, Water and Biogeochemical Cycles, Institute for
Landscape Ecology and Resources Management, Department of Agriculture,
Ecotrophology and Environmental Management) the combination of climate
model ensembles and hydro-biogeochemical model ensembles will be studied
with probabilistic and deterministic methods.

Requirements: Candidates should have a PhD in natural sciences and
strong programming and statistical background, handling large data sets
and GIS. Experience in project management and ability to work
efficiently in an international team in multidisciplinary projects are
essential. Applicants must provide evidence of high-quality research and
a very good publication record in peer-reviewed journals. A motivated,
well organized, creative and enthusiastic team-player who will
contribute to the group’s scientific success is much welcomed.
